The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the results of two methodological proposals used to map plains and terraces; The terrain descriptor algorithm HAND (Height Above the Nearest Drainage) and the mapping of relief patterns method, considering the analysis focused on areas subject to hydrodynamic processes (BITAR, 2014). The study area where the proposals were applied was the Ribeirão Pires basin in the municipality of Ribeirão Pires, located in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo; in the context of the elaboration of its Geotechnical Charter for Aptitude for Urbanization, result of an agreement between the Federal University of ABC and the Intermunicipal Consortium of Grande ABC. The primary data for the elaboration of the products in the two methodologies was the Digital Elevation Model (MDE) available by Emplasa (2010). The results obtained with the different processes performed, presented distinct but complementary conformations of the plain, since the results obtained with the HAND algorithm highlight areas related to water accumulation processes, and the relief pattern mapping methodology privileges the aspects of geomorphological compartmentalization and the resulting units. The comparison of the products and their field validation made possible the discussion about the relief unit of the plain and the hydrodynamic processes acting in its formation, besides making possible the definition of guidelines and recommendations contained in the scope of the geotechnical mapping for areas susceptible to the processes mentioned.
